This week with the Rock Cats I worked two games and one day in the office. Monday and tuesday night I worked their home stand against the Richmond Flying Squirrels. On monday night, I was in charge of promotions on and off the field. My promotions included the "Budweiser fans of the Game" where I chose four lucky fans in the designated red seats to receive a Budweiser cup. I also chose and initiated the "Potato Sack Race" on the field in between innings. Finally, I chose two siblings for the "Junior PA Announcer" for a 1/2 inning, where they announce the batters names for the Rock Cats. That following day was another home game and I was the mascot's handler. My main job was to make sure the kids wouldn't tackle him and get too crazy around him! It was a pretty simple day, just being a Cat's bodyguard basically. Then that next day I worked in the office making more calls to mechanics and mailing some more vouchers for their appreciation day. Here is an example of the script I used when calling the mechanics:
Hi, this is Hayley with the New Britain Rock Cats. I’m calling because we are having a _______________ appreciation night. ______________ is one of our sponsors and is providing tickets for _____________ companies in the area. The night is _____________ and the Rock Cats will be playing the _________________. Would your employees be interested in taking their families out to a game?
IF YES: And how many tickets would you like? Is ________________ still your address? Great, we will send those tickets in the mail right away. Thank you for your time!
This script helped immensely in the beginning when I first started the calls, because of course I was nervous since this was one of my first tasks with the Rock Cats. However, as time went on and I went through enough calls, I wouldn’t need the script whatsoever and I would improvise what I was going to say just to get them to take the vouchers. It definitely was intimidating talking to random people, and there were certainly times where I stumbled over my words or forgot to mention key phrases. I slowly saw progress with my success rate when I got more comfortable with what I was going to say. However, I finally finished up that project and am excited for what next week brings!
