In the final week of my internship, there was only two home games I could work before I had to leave for Tiffin for soccer preseason. On the Tuesday game, it was pretty standard on-field promotions, ranging from the puzzle to the mascot races. However, my last day on Wednesday proved to be a very weird ending to an internship. That game we finally received the #1 prospect in baseball, Byron Buxton. We had a packed stadium full of excited fans, and everything was going great until the 4th inning. Buxton collided head to head with another outfielder and both of them were on the ground immobile for roughly 45 minutes. Every employee of the New Britain Rock Cats was running around like a chicken with their head cut off! It was easily the scariest moment of my internship. And the same went for the interns as well; we had to deal with all of the fans and their never-ending questions, comfort the girlfriends of the players, and try to keep everyone in the stadium calm and organized. The situation was a lot more difficult than I first anticipated. Thinking back to that day, there are a lot of things I would probably do differently. Still, the Rock Cats were very impressed and joyful with how we decided to handle the situation. It was horrifying to see it in person. Within moments we had every major network (ESPN, CBS Sports, NBC Sports) calling us for footage. Every employee was scrambling to figure out what to do with a situation like this, and ended up handling it very well. Thankfully, Buxton walked away with only a concussion and the other player had bruised ribs. Other than that, it was sad saying goodbye to all of the great people at the Rock Cats, but exciting to come back to Tiffin!
