He began his baseball career in 2000 as a Ticket Operations Intern with the Hudson Valley Renegades in the New York Penn League. After finishing his internship, Derek had a brief stop in Knoxville, Tennessee, but then was recruited to come back to Hudson Valley in early 2001 and run the Group Sales Department and serve as Assistant Director of Ticket Operations. In 2002, Derek moved into the Promotions and Stadium Operations Department as well as focusing on Corporate Sales. In 2004, Derek was appointed Assistant General Manager when the first ever GM trade occurred sending Steve Gliner to the Fort Myers Miracle in exchange for Dave Burke. Derek held this position until early 2006 when he was appointed General Manager of the Batavia Muckdogs, also in the New York Penn League. At the end of the 2007 season, Derek and his new wife Ashley moved to Lancaster, California to become the new Assistant General Manager for the Lancaster JetHawks of the California League. Derek remained in this position until May of 2011 when he took on the role of Interim General Manager, right at the same time of the birth of daughter Rylee. He remained General Manager until the end of 2013 when Derek took his family and career to New Britain, Connecticut and begin a new adventure back on the east coast where his career began.
In the 3 years as General Manager, Derek oversaw an operation in Lancaster that increased their annual attendance by 20%. In 2013, the JetHawks had their best season in revenue in 10 years and ultimately by directing his great staff, he was awarded the 2013 California League Executive of the Year. Derek will miss his co-workers and relationships he built in Lancaster but is ready to take on new responsibilities and build new relationship in New Britain.
