The first week we started was May 12th, and a little over half of the interns came to the meeting (the other half were still taking their final exams and would start the following week). The group of interns contained mostly men, and their schools varied from places such as Clemson University, UCONN and Marist College. In this first meeting Derek went over the expectations of the interns, the amount of hours needed for everyone’s college credit, and what the interns could expect with the atmosphere of the Rock Cats. Derek then proceeded to introduce the interns to the employees. I found everyone at the office to have a positive attitude and outlook towards the New Britain Rock Cats, despite the immense amount of hours they work. Eventually the day proceeded, and we finally concluded the day with what each intern was hoping to get out of the internship.
For the first week of my internship, the Rock Cats had us jump right into activities. Our first day was used for introductions, meeting employees in all the different departments, and getting a general idea of what to expect for the summer. The rest of the week was dedicated to two areas: game days and non game days. The home games that we worked we were assigned to different departments of the ballpark; the first game I was working with the on-field promotions and the second game I worked in the merchandise shop. On the non game days, we worked in the office making calls to different companies. I was in charge of calling mechanics in the area asking them if they were interested in coming out to our "Mechanics Appreciation Night" and would proceed to mail the vouchers out to the mechanics.
